Themed special edition of Education 3-13 (Routledge)

Outdoor learning and links to the 3-13 curriculum: implications for practitioners.

We are developing a proposal for a themed edition of the UK journal Education 3-13. The editors of Education 3-13 are keen to internationalise the journal so items from a variety of institutions including those from overseas are welcome. Papers developing this theme which will appeal to academics, writers and professionals interested in children between the ages of 3 to 13 are sought.

Outdoor learning and links to the 3-13 curriculum: implications for practitioners.

We are in the process of negotiating with the editor of Education 3-13 about a themed edition of the journal for 2008/9. The above focus has emerged because research has suggested one of the main barriers to outdoor learning is a perception that it is an 'add-on' which may jeopardise time needed for concentration on raising academic standards.  In addition, the launch in the UK of the manifesto for learning outside the classroom by the DfES makes academic input on this topic very timely.  The editors of Education 3-13 are keen to internationalise the journal, so items from a variety of institutions including those from overseas are welcome.

Expressions of interest are requested now.

Each paper needs to be 4000 to 5500 words in length and should contribute to the theme “outdoor learning and links to the 3-13 curriculum: implications for practitioners”. The focus of each paper should be on issues for academics, writers and professionals interested in children between the ages of 3 to 13.

Please email an outline of your proposed paper to tony.rea@plymouth.ac.uk by the 31 January 2007. This should include:
Author(s) names
Affiliation
Title of the paper
A paragraph outlining the paper and explaining how it contributes to the theme.

From the proposals we receive by the end of January we will develop a detailed proposal including a brief overview of the project and a paragraph on each of the proposed items with authors’ names. The Board of the journal will consider the developed proposal and suggest any changes. At that stage we will contact successful authors and outline the timescale involved (which will probably mean writing during the first six months of 2007).

As guest editors, we will develop the edition and manage the writing process against an agreed timeline. We will arrange for double peer review for each item and request any amendments.  However, the final version of all items is provided to the Board for comment and they reserve the right to suggest further changes.

We are aiming for a themed edition to be published in late 2008 or early 2009.
